Nausea

These are descriptions of how individuals experienced various symptoms during withdrawal. While everyone's withdrawal is unique and symptoms will be different for everyone, it may be useful to know what others went through.

All withdrawal symptoms can be caused by things in addition to withdrawal. If a symptom is persistent or you are worried by it, it is always a good idea to get it checked out by your doctor to ensure nothing else is going on.

Definition: (n) A feeling of sickness in the stomach characterized by an urge to vomit.

What I've Felt:

"You feel like your belly is bloated to the point of bursting by the contents of your stomach. You feel a pressing desire to vomit."

"I've felt like I've had a consistent, low-grade case of food poisoning, with occasional acute flare-ups leading to stomach cramps, over-salivating, and diminished appetite." - Matt

What I've Felt:

"My nausea has returned after 7 months off. I had it when I was still taking Diazepam and for months after I came off but that gradually subsided and I thought I was clear - now here it is again but it isn't quite so bad this time. At least I can still eat. I had to truly force myself just to eat the smallest amounts the first time around and lost 28 lbs in weight."

What I've Felt:

"I have developed nausea, dry retching in the morning, no appetite, trouble keeping food down."

What I've Felt:

"Dry retching was my worst symptom when withdrawing and when I came off. I still feel nauseous at 5 months off. Fortunately I could keep food down. I only stopped dry retching 6 weeks ago after having been off some time. It can go on and on but you get windows of weeks when it does stop."

My Coping Strategies

bullet Acceptance
bulletBreathe into your belly; picture yourself breathing in through your heels and out through your fingertips.
bulletEat a small portion of bland, non-sugary food (i.e., a slice of whole-wheat bread, some crackers, a potato, or oatmeal
bulletEat four to six small meals or high-protein snacks throughout the day, avoiding the traditional three large meals. These big bricks of food are harder for your already-overtaxed stomach to digest, and they also put pressure on your diaphragm, making it difficult to breathe.
bullet Meditation
