Apathy

These are descriptions of how individuals experienced various symptoms during withdrawal. While everyone's withdrawal is unique and symptoms will be different for everyone, it may be useful to know what others went through.

All withdrawal symptoms can be caused by things in addition to withdrawal. If a symptom is persistent or you are worried by it, it is always a good idea to get it checked out by your doctor to ensure nothing else is going on.

What I've Felt:

"I felt a lack of desire to do anything, ever, as well as a lack of feeling and caring about anything, anywhere. That nothing is really worth doing, and that nothing is worth caring about besides my own suffering. I let dust collect on the bookshelves, trash pile up in my car, telephone calls go unanswered, rancid dishes pile up in the sink. I pick at leftovers for a week before I could drum up the motivation to go grocery shopping, instead surviving on frozen bread dough heated in the microwave and stale bagels. I used paper towels as bathroom tissue because I was either too lazy or too scared to go to the convenience store. I could barely find the energy to walk the dog, though I always feel better once I was outside. I started books, then set them aside because I couldn't focus, surviving on a diet of lightweight magazine articles instead.

I would think of all the things I used to do, and love to do, and they seem completely foreign to me. Why should I even leave the house when I would just suffer at the next place, and end up back at home anyway? Better just to lie in bed." - Matt
